4/23/2024 0 Comments Epson easy photo print update![]() ![]() In their German blog article about the printer ZEDOnet | Epson SureColor SC-P700 und EcoTank ET-8550 | Blog, they only mention pigment black in conjunction with printing on non-photo papers, therefore I doubt that hey have even looked into implementing anything similar to AWB (mix of grey dye and pigment black). TurboPrint release notes don't mention any improvements in their release notes, I would assume that they have not addressed the ABW topic, though there is otherwise extensive paper support and even support for 3rd party pigment ink sets. There's nothing specific on ink selection in the Epson Linux driver sources other than color vs. Thanks, that's a lot of helpful information! I do like the printer and it can make nice black and white prints, but here are some things I wish I had known going in. I don't have any previous experience printing, so I'm still on the steep side of the learning curve. I bought the Epson 8550 printer in large part because of the EcoTanks and Keith Cooper's reviews. It does seem that the Epson 8500/8550 is cheaper to run on a "per print" basis than the other printers on my "possible printers" list, which included the Canon Pro-200/300. I put together a spreadsheet making some assumptions based on Epson claims regarding how many square inches of printing (they give how many 4圆 prints, I turned that into square inches) a set of refills will make, combined with information from the Red River Paper website ( Cost of Printing: Calculate Your Per Page Print Costs - the entire website is worth exploring just for the information). We considered bolting the table to a wall, but instead have it braced against a sturdy metal office table. The printer "rocks" side to side when printing unless the surface it's sitting on is very solidly fixed in place - not good for a tall, narrow table like we have it sitting on. The output tray seems a bit flimsy, as some people on the B&H reviews of the printer have mentioned. The printer itself is easy enough to set up though there really is a lot of blue tape to remove as the videos mention. So instead I'm using the rear straight-through feed path, which means removing the duplexer, and more to the point requires approximately 48" of desk/counter space to accomodate the output tray, the printer itself, and space to feed in the maximum paper size (13"X19").įeeding in the paper using the rear straight-though feed path requires setting up physical guides of some sort to make sure the paper goes in straight - a fact mentioned in DPReview forums - easy enough to do but not something I would have anticipated in advance. Regarding the printer itself, some Epson 8550 printers leave roller marks using the rear upright feed path, especially with thicker papers. Not being able to access the functionality of Epson Print Layout and ABW via Linux, I gave up and set up a Windows machine just for printing. Uninstalling WINE from a previously pure 64-bit Linux is not fun. So I installed WINE just to try to run the Epson Windows drivers and software - big fail. WINE is not set up to access USB printer ports, which I didn't know then, though maybe it should have been obvious. That was awhile ago, maybe TurboPrint has been updated in the meantime. It's possible that using the little hue/chroma circle would enable one to eliminate the tint by adding a counter-tint, but I did not try this. That person asked whether TurboPrint provides access to ABW but did not get a response. A person who posted to the TurboPrint forum had encountered the same problem. There is a TurboPrint interface that looks sort of like the Epson ABW interface, but resulting prints were heavily tinted. ![]() I installed the trial version of TurboPrint. I spent a lot of time experimenting with GIMP and darktable, and also using command-line printing options using all the usual printing software provided by Debian repositories, plus the Epson Linux drivers, looking for alternative ways to get access to Epson ABW, to no avail. I do like the printer and it can make nice black and white prints, but here are some things I wish I had known going in:Įpson-provided Linux drivers do not provide the Epson Print Layout software that Keith Cooper uses for making black and white prints, using Epson's Advanced Black and White (ABW). ![]() I do care about ease of setup and possibility of compatibility with Linux, not just Windows. My main computer runs Linux. I don't care about wireless, as I will connect to my computer with a USB cable regardless. I don't care about borderless printing, as I won't print any photo without a white border. PS - I don't care about print speed, only quality. ![]()
